The Challenge

The task was to complete the project while the residents remained in the home. This project posed several challenges, including:

Ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents was the top priority.

We understand that care home residents thrive on routine and familiarity. Any changes to their environment or routine can be disruptive and distressing for them, therefore minimising disruption to daily routines was an important consideration.

Because care homes must be kept clean and hygienic at all times to prevent the spread of infections and diseases, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene throughout was vital.

Ensuring accessibility and mobility, as many residents had mobility issues, and some used wheelchairs or walking aids which could not be impeded.

The solution

Careful planning of the construction work via Microsoft Project, ensured minimal disruption to the residents’ routine.

By installing a temporary timber wall with soundproofing plasterboard and specialist sound insulation quilt, including plastic sheeting, we ensured that the residents were not exposed to any hazards, excessive noise, dust, or dangerous materials.

Due to the nature of the work the rear garden was inaccessible to the clients. We took steps including creating an area in the front of the building for clients and staff enjoyment, safely separated from the works to ensure that the building project did not impede the residents’ mobility or accessibility in any way.

By maintaining regular communication and transparency with the owners and residents, we helped to alleviate any concerns or anxiety they may have had about issues that may affect them during construction work.

The project was completed on time and on budget with zero defects.
