Conversion of a domestic house into a six bedroom facility for young people with severe learning difficulties.
RDS Carebuild was appointed to deliver a full-scale conversion of a residential property into a six-bedroom specialist care facility for young people with severe learning difficulties. Located in a residential area in Basingstoke, the project required not only expert construction but also sensitive neighbour engagement and late-stage integration of advanced fire safety systems.
Transforming a domestic house into a compliant, purpose-built facility for young people with complex needs required detailed planning and precise execution. Our team redesigned the internal layout to accommodate six individual bedrooms, shared living spaces, and essential care infrastructure, all while maintaining a homely, comforting atmosphere.
This adaptive reuse of a domestic structure into a specialist care setting reflects our commitment to delivering accessible, safe and development-focused environments within the community.
Given the building's proximity to neighbouring homes, community impact was a key concern. At RDS Carebuild, we recognise that successful care construction projects depend not only on quality workmanship but also on maintaining positive relationships with the surrounding community.
To that end, we held weekly meetings with neighbours throughout the project. These sessions were designed to address concerns, provide construction updates, and ensure open, two-way communication. This proactive approach significantly reduced disruption, avoided potential conflicts, and helped foster a collaborative atmosphere around the site.
Late in the project, the client requested the installation of a full fire sprinkler system—a vital addition for a care home of this nature. The challenge was significant: to integrate the system without disrupting the nearly completed internal finishes and to support three tonnes of water storage in the roof space.
RDS Carebuild responded quickly by:
This careful coordination ensured the fire safety system met all relevant compliance standards while preserving the integrity of the existing work.
Linnet House is now a vibrant and secure place where young people with severe learning difficulties can live, learn, and thrive. The building features brightly coloured communal areas, personalised bedrooms, and accessible spaces for both relaxation and engagement.
The project was delivered on time and within budget, providing the client with a fully compliant, future-proofed care setting—complete with modern fire protection systems, thoughtful design, and a foundation for long-term community integration.
